  • Imagine You Find A Note In The Chest Offering Cash To Leave It, WWYD?

Imagine you find this note In the chest, what would you do?

    "Congratulations searcher, well done.

The chest is yours, but if you leave the chest and all of its contents except one of the bronze keys, and bring me that bronze key, I will pay you in cash more than the market value of the chest. Call me and let me know what you decide to do: 555-555-5555
    ff"

Do you keep your trophy catch or do you take the catch and release option so that others might share in the joy on another day?

Of course, if such an option were to exist, you know Forrest would have someone he trusted go and move the chest to the next viable location so you couldn't double dip by taking the buyout and then returning to take the chest too.

I would leave the chest if there were a cash reward for doing so.

I would take the chest and forfeit any cash reward there may have been for leaving it.

I would only take the contents of the chest and leave the box for someone else to find.

Your hypothetical situation is not reality... No one leaves it... They take it and contents to Forrest would be more realistic... Why leave it for someone to come behind you and take it before Forrest could retrieve it! Then you really get messed around...

I vote none of the above....

If Forrest is ready to reclaim some normalcy in his life, and I get the feeling he really is, I don't see how these sorts of options would be compatible with that desire.
When you find yourself at the end of the rainbow, you'll have found what you seek.

Thanks for the reply. I added "None of the above."

My motivation for posing this hypothetical is twofold:

        1) To get my fellow searchers to think about how other searchers might approach what they may choose to do if they find the chest, because lets face it, we are a motley crew of very diverse and often "eccentric" people and we don't all think or act alike.

        2) To see what other options fellow searchers might be willing to share regarding what they might do if they find the chest. Especially if there are other options we haven't considered before.

Id leave it if that’s what he wanted. Tbqh I’d have a lot of qualms about being the one who ends the chase anyway. So I’d be glad to know it was being continued.

Are we allowed to replace anything we want to take?

I like hypothetical fun, and one thing I've learned from this game is never say never. (Well maybe I haven't learned that. I keep putting it down and saying "never again!" only to be suckered back in five minutes later, like a bigmouth trout who never learns.)

I like to think I'm pragmatic. I don't need stuff for stuff's sake, and I don't need the extra job of liquidating priceless mayan gold via round trip flights to Sotheby’s. The trade is a no brainer to me.

But I also have a sentimental streak and there are a few "souvenirs" I'd hope to keep, including the chest itself. If I've chased that thing over the river and through the woods for XX years, and FINALLY came across that earthtoned 10x10 box, aka *THE* treasure chest, I kinda wanna keep it. And maybe display it on a mantle in plain view without anyone else knowing what it represents. My own "secret where."

And I like to wear gawdy rings, so if it fits without alteration, I'd want to keep the Spanish ring. Maybe a nugget & stone or two to make other rings from.

If we're allowed to replace anything we want, I'd keep these few things and send Forrest an IOU. Hahaha.

I'd leave and go get a tracking bug, then return and place it in the chest, well hidden. Then I'd call Forrest and see what his offer is, tell him that for double he can have his wish. Later I'd track the chest to it's new location, rinse and repeat.
              Muahaha!

I tried that phone number you mentioned and nobody answered.
                  In my opinion.

I’d probably leave it and add a lock of hair so someone could find me when I’m 88 and tell me they found it too. Some of my blonde hairs....not the grey ones. God forbid you all knew I wasn’t a natural....

If I ever do find the chest, I won't be opening it until I get it somewhere safe. If there were such a note inside, it would have failed its purpose.

I doubt that FF would rely on a note in the chest as a way to entice the finder to leave it where it was found. Also, the finder might not be very good at rehiding the treasure in a way that wouldn't be obvious to the next hiker to come along.

Bottom line: if the treasure is found, it's not going to be left behind.

I would not like to see the chest broken up.

If it were me, I would put out the word I was looking for a benefactor to buy it to start and new or donate it to an existing museum. I would settle for Vegas casino that would agree to have it on public display.

I would like to have molds made of the chest first so I could have replica chests cast. A replica would be a nice family heirloom to pass down. And there might be others who would like a replica as well.

But I would like to see a statue of Forrest placed where the chest is someday found. At a minimum, a brass plack placed to commemorate the Chase. With something placed where the chest is found, I think many would pilgrimage to that special place for many years to come as the poem and the books would still lead to a destination many would like to visit for a selfie. Especially all of the rest of us who did not find it first.

                            Thanks for pointing this out!

If I find it and leave the chest, I will be sure to put 20 pounds of rocks inside it before I leave with the gold and jewels.

I'm sorry I have a devious mind, but the the thought of someone lugging 40 pounds of what they think is treasure ever how many miles they have to hike it out to open it to inspect it, only to find rocks inside, priceless!
