  • Help Me Raise Moving Expenses

Hi guys. I realize I'm fairly new to this community and not many of you know me or my story. However, I'm hoping that at least a few here will be looking for charitable causes to donate to anyway with it being the holiday season and maybe will take me into consideration. A few years ago I became disabled due to a severe reaction to an antibiotic that put me in a wheelchair. I was bedridden for the first 8 months and to this day I still can't walk right or work. My husband had to stop working that first year to be my full time care giver. He ended up losing his retirement money and we almost lost our house. Thankfully we managed to scrape by barely, but only by going deeply into debt. We have finally sold our house (we close in two weeks) so that we can move from our home in Maryland to the Mojave Desert. The dry mild climate helps my condition and makes it so I can walk a little further with less pain.

The issue is that we are coming up short on moving costs. The money from our house sale isn't as much as we hoped for as the place needed a lot of work. It's just barely enough for us to pay off the debt we incurred during the first year or so after my initial injuries and to put a down payment on a modest house. The cost to move 2600 miles is pretty high. Kristie was kind enough to allow me to post a link here.

Even if you can't donate, if you would consider posting a link to my campaign on your social media accounts I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading and Happy Holidays to you all!

I've suffered some financial setbacks this year that have put the hurtin' on the pursestrings. If things start perking up I'll keep you in mind. Sorry I can't do more right now. Good luck.

antigroove thanks for replying though. I just don't know very many people so it's a weird situation. What really stinks is just the fact that while we were able to delay losing our house, essentially we're still losing it because we're losing all the equity we had in it and having to start over. I hope your setback problem turns around as well.

Most disabilities are unexpected and sudden. Hear you there. Lost everything but hope. Many a time, I considered a gofundme thing but didn't. Glad beyond measure that the bills far exceeded the possibility of payment which made the total bankruptcy possible and soon. The most difficult thing after a loss and after you move is to figure out a way to adjust your standard of living. I believe it is possible but not easy as one has to figure out all the community services in place to serve you. I would caution that you might want to find out about your disability and medical prior to changing states. So many things these days hinge on state of residence or state of disability designation that I've seen people who move out of state end up moving back. I am finding that is what will happen to me. I have to relocate in a few months. Figuring out the where is a nightmare. I wish you goodness wherever you find home. Remember to visit the local department of health for a list of resources upon your arrival. When in doubt or in an emergency, dial 211. It will give a list of community services for whatever community you are in when dialing. I don't have dollars but experience on where to locate resources.

Well I've done my research already. And yes our standard of living has gone way down already and will not ever be the same again most likely .I don't think anything will change with moving when one is deemed permanent disabled and is on SSDI. I don't get benefits from the state Iive in, only federal. One of the reasons (besides climate) were mivmov to CA is that they take good care of their disabled. One if the experimental treatments I've had which helped a great deal isn't covered by Medicare .CA is different though and I've talked to peoope who got it covered once they moved there. Already have talked to doctors and specialists there who are willing to take me as a patient. Will probably have to drive am hour to get to the doctor though. Rural CA is the only lacr we can afford.

I have loved your input to this community and your insight has helped me with my current solve.... If I was looking into the eyes of the frog.... Well... I would just handle it.... But, I'm not..... Hopefully soon!

Thanks! Anything's appreciated. We are getting an early start to try to raise the money, but will be needing it in early January so we can get on the road to go see houses and to make a deposit to reserve the moving truck. We're just really lucky the new owner of our house is being gracious enough to let us rent it from her until mid to late March at the latest, and letting us wait until after the holidays to start packing. Not a lot of time when you consider we have to drive to CA, find a house, make an offer and close in time to get back for my monthly doctor appointment before our move out date. It's going to be kind of hectic the next few months that's for sure.

Sounds like things are going well. Wow - a house, a real home! A dream I will never be able to afford. Good luck and sounds like you are one your way to CA! Yeah!

In my hurried moments, I forgot to say I'm saddened you have to sell and move for care. Each state is different. When did the disability begin? I hope it is a road to improvement - My best wishes for you and your upcoming year of journey and resettling.

Well we're all going to die somehow and if an earthquake causes me to fall into the ocean or sink down towards the earth's core, at least I will have enjoyed my coffee watching a beautiful desert sunrise that day!
